A Guide to SMART Heating Controls

SMART heating stands for “Self-Monitoring Analysis & Reporting Technology”, but what does this mean?

What makes a thermostat SMART is that it lets you manage every minute of your home’s heating schedule at the touch of a button via your tablet, smartphone or laptop.

So how does a SMART thermostat work? Well, a normal thermostat makes changes to the temperature in your home using a dial or a control panel, but a SMART thermostat uses three basic components to provide a more user-friendly and accessible way of controlling your home’s heating, making it more efficient.

Firstly, you must install your new thermostat. This can be done yourself by following the user manual or by getting a certified Bord Gais Energy engineer to do the work for you.

Second, set up your control unit which connects to the internet via your home WiFi.

Finally, download the mobile/device application for your smart phone, tablet or laptop that will let you take control of all the settings and times.

You may be asking, but how do SMART heating controls benefit me? Well, most importantly, they save you money and it’s easy to see why. We are more often than not wasting our money heating an empty home. We all want to come home from work to a warm home, especially in these cold winter months. However, some central heating systems just can’t be relied upon to guarantee this, so they end up leaving their heating on all day.

This is not just expensive, but inefficient as it increases our carbon footprint. SMART heating controls can save you up to 30% going forward. You can set the temperature well in advance and your system will work out when it needs to turn back on again – just in time to get your house up to the required temperature for when you come home.

HIVE heating controls also allows you to manage your hot water from your smartphone, something other SMART controls cannot.

Another economically efficient aspect of SMART heating controls is multizone. If you have multiple zones set up in your house, you can add multizone so that if you’re downstairs all day you don’t need to heat upstairs.

Geolocation allows your SMART thermostat to know when you’ve gone out and left the heating on. It can then send you a reminder to turn it off. This is another great way to cut down on your heating bills.
